Flapjacks are a satisfying treat at anytime of the day. These chocolate orange flapjacks provide that sweet yet fresh flavour.
With flapjacks predominately being oats, they are a great unexpensive snack to make. They can be personalised in numerous ways as well so you never need to get bored with them. Zesting orange into the wet ingredients gives a touch of citrus that pairs great with the chocolate chips that I add into the mixture before adding popping into the tin.

Star Ingredient
The citrus hit of the orange in these flapjacks make them great at anytime of year. You can use any type of oranges within this recipe depending on what is in season. I used a navel orange, but blood orange would work just as well. If making towards the end of the year you could always zest in a couple of clementines (as they are smaller in size).
How to Purchase Ingredients to be conscious to the Planet
Go old school with your golden syrup and buy it in a tin. There was always a tin of golden syrup in the cupboard when I was younger. Once the tin is empty, you can add in some hot water to wash it out, leave to dry and then pop it into the recycling.
Oats are easily found in zero waste shops and can be pop into numerous type of containers. The Kilner bulk food bags can be a good choice, and what I have been using recently. However, any container with a tight lid can be used – glass jar, elephant box tin, plastic container that you already have.
Chocolate is a baking staple that can be found plastic free if you do a bit of exploring. Chocolate chips I have found only at Zero Store so far, but chocolate buttons I have found more widely. Either would work in this recipe – you would just want to roughly chop buttons. If you can find chocolate in paper or compostable packaging these could also be an option. I have a couple of local companies that package their chocolate in these ways.
Whether you shop at farm shops, green grocers or a supermarket, always choose loose when it comes to your oranges. You can take along produce or net bags to pop them into so that they aren’t rolling loose in your baskets. These can easily be found online if you search for them or pop along to zero waste shops and have a look at the products they have available.
If you have a focus on wanting to utilise organic ingredients in your kitchen, I recommend checking out Forrist. They are an online plastic free supermarket here in the UK. All their products are organic and they have majority of the ones required for this recipe. Their chocolate drops are a perfect size for adding into baking recipes.

Tips and Trick when making Chocolate Orange Flapjacks
Chocolate choice
I used a mixture of milk and dark chocolate chips in these flapjacks. You can use just one type, dark or milk depending on your preference. You can also mix up the percentage of the two chocolates – so if you haven’t quite got enough of one just add a bit more of the other

Size of Orange
My local farm shop tends to have large oranges, so I used just one in this recipe. However, 1 medium or 2 small oranges would also work. These could be useful if using clementines or blood oranges as these tend to be a bit smaller than navel.
Chocolate Melting
Don’t panic. Due to the heat of the wet ingredients when you add the chocolate chips in, they will potentially melt a bit. This just means that you can have chips of chocolate or areas where the oats are chocolate as you bite in to your slice.

Portioning
For these flapjacks, I cut them into 3 long wides and then 4 to given 12 squares. This size fits perfectly into the pot that I use currently for my sweet treat in my lunch bag. You can cut your chocolate orange flapjacks however you like though. If you want smaller, you could do 4 and 4 to give 16 squares. Or you could cut in half long ways and then do more vertical cuts so that you flapjacks are more strips than squares.
