These orangetastic poptarts are a citrus hit in the morning. Enjoy alongside a glass of orange juice for a total vitamin C breakfast.
Orange is a classic when it comes to breakfast. A lot of people would choose orange as their juice option. These poptarts are making that staple breakfast drink the star of the show. As a citrus fruit is the star of the show, these poptarts aren’t overly sweet.

Don’t have time for breakfast. As poptarts are easily to transport they can easily be package and taken with you. You can then enjoy when you get a moment.
Star Ingredient
Orange. Orange. And more orange. These poptarts have got orange running throughout. The pastry has the zest of the orange in it to give that subtle citrus taste. The filling is homemade orange curd. This could be either made with navel oranges or blood oranges. Either would make a lovely orange filling for these poptarts. If you want to make your own, you can find my recipe here.
The juice from the orange is then used within the icing. No waste from this orange. Combining the juice as the liquid for the icing adds to that natural orange flavour from these poptarts.

How to Purchase Ingredients to be Conscious towards the Planet
As orange is the focus in this recipe, so it will be when considering shopping. Oranges are a fruit that can easily be found loose so always pick this option if you can. If you don’t have a net bag to take with you, just let them roll loose in your bag or basket.
Farm shops will generally have citrus fruits so, again if you have the option, it can be nice to support local when shopping.
If you don’t want to make your own curd, you can explore local makers or food markets. Shopping local for jams and curds is a great way to support your local community.

Tips for Orangetastic Poptarts
Cutting out your Poptarts

I have a rectangular cutter that I use when I make poptarts. It was from a set for making a gingerbread house. If you haven’t got a rectangle cutter, you could use a different shape cutter – the amount of poptarts made may vary due to size of alternate cutter.
The other option is to use a pizza cutter and ruler to create rectangles. The pizza cutter is a smooth way of cutting out lines and is much quicker as well. Decide how big you want your rectangles to be and then cut wheel the pizza cutter along the ruler to the desired point. Easy!
Decorating
If the initial icing runs over onto the crimped edges don’t worry. It will just create a more rustic look. With the colour icing, you could drizzle from just a spoon. If wanting to be more precise, you could add to a piping bag made from parchment paper or a reusable squeezy bottle.
The coloured decoration can be as you pleased. I created diagonal lines on the top of mine. You could experiment with lines, dots, swirls.

- Rectangle Cutter or Ruler and Pizza Cutter
- Pastry Brush
- Teaspoon
- Fork
- Small Bowl
- Mini Palette Knife (optional)
Ingredients
- 300 g Plain Flour
- 150 g Plant Based Butter
- 75 g Chilled Water
- Zest of 1 Orange
- Orange Curd
- 1 Egg beaten for an egg wash
- 75 g Icing Sugar
- 3 Teaspoon Orange Juice
- Red and Yellow Food Colouring
Instructions
- In a bowl, add the flour and the butter cut into manageable chunks, along with the orange zest
- Rub flour and butter together until fine breadcrumb texture forms
- Add about 60ml of the chilled water into the breadcrumb mixture
- Use a knife to bring the dough together and then see if it comes together with you hands – if required add more water little by little so there are no crumbs let in the bowl
- Flatten the dough into a disc as you are going to chill in the fridge – I pop my dough into a bowl and then use a reusable bowl cover to cover the bowl before popping into the fridge; you can chill you dough as you would normally do for 30 minutes
- Line a baking sheet with a silicone baking sheet or baking parchment paper
- After 30 minute, dust a clean dry surface with flour, and roll out you dough until thickness of £1 piece
- Using a rectangle cutter or free cutting rectangles if you wish, cut out 10 rectangles
- Place 5 onto the baking sheet
- Using a pastry brush, brush egg wash around all edges of each rectangle on the baking sheet
- Spoon 1-2 teaspoons of orange curd into the centre of each rectangle (within the egg wash border)
- Add the next 5 rectangles on top, and press close around the edges
- Using a fork crimp the edges of each poptart
- Pop into the fridge to chill for 30 minutes
- Preheat the oven to 180 degrees
- Remove the poptarts from the fridge and brush the tops with the beaten egg
- Bake in the oven on the middle shelf for about 25 minutes until golden brown
- Transfer onto a cooling rack to cool
- Whilst the poptarts are cooling, make up the icing
- In a bowl combine the icing sugar with the orange juice until a thick pour consistency is formed
- Once the poptarts are fully cooled, use a spoon to spread the icing on top of each poptart, to create a rough rectangle shape
- With the icing that is left, add a bit of red and yellow food colouring to create an orange colour
- Use the orange icing to decorate on top of the white icing
- Store in an airtight container
