Star Ingredient
Almonds play a starring role in this recipe, bringing a rich, nutty flavour that perfectly complements the sweet notes of cherry. These Bakewell tart energy balls use almonds in three different forms—flaked, ground, and as an essence—to layer the flavours and mimic the classic Bakewell taste.
Flaked almonds add a delightful crunch, giving these energy balls a satisfying texture. Ground almonds provide a soft, moist base that helps to bind the ingredients together. While the almond essence infuses each bite with that unmistakable marzipan-like aroma which is that quintessential Bakewell tart taste. Together, these almond variations create a snack that’s both nourishing and reminiscent of the classic dessert, but with a modern, health-conscious twist.

How to Purchase Ingredients to be Conscious to the Planet
Energy balls are great snacks to make with ingredients from zero waste shops. A lot of the ingredients, such as nuts and dried fruit traditional come in plastic bags when looking for them in supermarkets. Therefore, by making a simple swap with your shopping habits, you can have the ingredients you need to make a variety of energy balls all without plastic.
Glass jars or stainless steel tubs can be useful vessels to take along to your zero waste shop when picking up for Bakewell tart energy ball ingredients. All the ingredients can be popped into either of these too making shopping easy.
Oats and white chocolate I tend you a lot more frequently within bakes, so these I like to pick up in bulk. As a result, I utilise bulk food bags when picking up my oats. Either size work well and as they fold down and popper close, they are very secure for items like oats. If white chocolate is available at your local shop, you can buy online from zero waste shops that ship nationwide. One of my favourites is Zero store as they do chocolate chips. These are great sizes for adding to energy balls if a recipe calls for it. As it is a small amount that this recipe calls for to decorate them, melting chocolate chips I find usual.

Tips and Tricks when Making Bakewell Tart Energy Balls
Haven’t got Almond Essence to Hand
Now you may ask, do you need to have almond essence to add to these energy balls. The answer is no. You can just as easily make these Bakewell tart energy balls using just the ground and flaked almonds. However, if you really want to capture that almond flavour, that I especially associate with Bakewell tarts, I recommend adding in that teaspoon of it.
Looking for a more Traditional Finish to your Bakewell Tart Energy Balls
There are 2 ways you can top this energy balls to create that nostalgic look of a Bakewell tart. I choose to use melted white chocolate to create that base for the glace cherries. However, if you want to have the more classic finish of icing that your cherry sits on you can. Start with a small amount of icing sugar and water as you will want to create a spreadable yet thick consistency. This means that it won’t just drip down the side of your energy balls.
