Indulge in spooky chocolate Halloween brownies, featuring rich black cocoa, dark chocolate, and a touch of festive coloured fun.

Get ready to make Halloween even sweeter with these decadent chocolate brownies. Made using black cocoa powder for a deep, dark colour and rich chocolate flavour, these brownies are the perfect treat for the season. Each bite is filled with gooey dark chocolate buttons, creating a delightful texture that balances the crispy edges with a melt-in-your-mouth centre.
To give these brownies a festively spooky touch, they’re drizzled in creamy white chocolate, adding a sweet contrast to the dark base. The finishing touch comes from a sprinkling of crushed Halloween-coloured candies, giving each piece a fun pop of colour and a satisfying crunch. Whether you’re making them for a Halloween party or just a seasonal treat, these brownies are sure to impress.
Star Ingredient
While black cocoa powder gives these brownies their spooky dark appearance, it’s the dark chocolate buttons that truly steal the show. These chocolatey morsels melt into little pockets of gooey goodness throughout the brownies, adding a luxurious texture when eaten warm, that takes each bite to the next level. Unlike chocolate chips, which hold their shape during baking, dark chocolate buttons melt down to create rich, velvety swirls of chocolate in the centre. This results in a decadent, almost fudge-like consistency that makes these brownies irresistibly indulgent.
Using high-quality dark chocolate buttons also brings out deeper, more complex flavours. Their slightly bitter notes balance perfectly with the sweetness from the white chocolate drizzle and the festive candy sprinkles. The combination ensures every bite is a layered experience, with the dark chocolate buttons delivering that extra hit of cocoa that chocolate lovers crave.

How to Purchase Ingredients to be Conscious to the Planet
Brownies can be so simple to make with ingredients that you can find plastic free in supermarkets and zero waste shops.
If shopping in a supermarket, choose eggs that come in cardboard cartons. Flour and the caster sugar come in paper bags so ensure that you recycle these.
Chocolate buttons / chips I would recommend getting from zero waste shops. You can pick up as many as you need without any plastic and use containers that you already have. Some of my favourite places to pick up chocolate from are Zero Store, The Source Bulk Foods and Forrist. They all ship nationwide in the UK which makes it handy as one of my local shops doesn’t stock chocolate in these forms.
Vanilla is purchasable in glass bottles if you search for it. Littlepod is a company that supplies vanilla in glass bottles or aluminium tubes. They also champion real vanilla. If you are feeling like you want to make things from scratch more, you can make your own vanilla extract and paste. This requires vanilla pods which you can also get from Littlepod. You can find a link to a recipe to make this below.

Tips when Baking Chocolate Halloween Brownies
Don’t have Black Cocoa Powder
Although the recipe calls for black cocoa powder, you can make these chocolate Halloween brownies with normal cocoa powder.
If you use traditional cocoa powder, the taste and colour will vary slightly. You will have more of a brown brownie rather than a darker, or most black brownie. The taste will also be close to chocolate rather than the “oreo” chocolate flavour from the black cocoa powder.
If you go the cocoa powder route, you can find this within zero waste shops. This allows you to avoid the plastic packaging that black cocoa powder comes in.
Halloween Coloured Chocolate Candies
Similar to the Halloween monster cookies, these chocolate Halloween brownies utilise Halloween coloured M&Ms. These are green, purple and orange in colour which are colours that I associate with Halloween. You can buy other sugar coated chocolates that are orange and green, which can be picked up in cupboard tubes. These would be a plastic free option to the decorative colours.
Alternatively, if the colour isn’t as important you can pick up sugar coated chocolate candies from zero waste shops and use these.
Bashing up your Halloween Coloured Chocolate Candies
The easiest and cleanest way to bash chocolate candies is utilised reusable food bags / pouches. Popping them into a food bag allows them to be contained and stop them from flying around. A rolling pin can then be used to break them up.
Silicone food bags can be a great option when it comes to not only bashing chocolates but also storing food. Some of my favourites are Moonmoon as they come in various sizes.

Drizzling the White Chocolate
The drizzle white chocolate creates a sweetness and colour contrast to these chocolate brownies. With the chocolate you can apply it in a few ways design ways and equipment wise.
You can simply use a teaspoon and drizzle the melted chocolate across the top. Then 2nd option would be to use a piping bag if you are looking for more control. You can make easily make piping bags from parchment paper to avoid the single use plastic ones. There are also reusable piping bottles that you can pick up which is another alternative to piping bags.
If you want to add even more Halloween touches to these brownies you could pipe the white chocolate in a spider web design. This would give the overall block of brownies a great design when presented together. You could pipe spider webs on each individual brownie but you may need additional white chocolate or this.
